REO Speedwagon & Chicago announce joint summer tour

REO Speedwagon and Chicago are hitting the road together for a 15-date summer tour. Pollstar reported that as of now, the joint trek kicks off on August 2nd at Phoenix, Arizona's Comerica Theater and winds down on August 31st at Dallas, Texas' Gexa Energy Pavilion -- but knowing both bands, additional dates will probably be added sooner than later.

Chicago's Robert Lamm talked about the similarities between the two legendary ensembles: "It's ironic, that these two legendary bands, who both have roots in Illinois, were label-mates (on Columbia) in the 70's, and experienced waves of immense success in the 80's and 90's, and have somehow continued to consistently make compelling music, both in-studio and on tour. . . have never before performed together! This situation is about to change, as Chicago and REO will perform together during the concert's encore and present a finale that will thrill their audiences. As a musician who has always respected REO's skills, I look forward to our first rehearsals early this summer. This will be fun!"

REO's Kevin Cronin added: "With so many personal connections between various members of REO and Chicago, it is amazing that we have never actually toured together. I love it that the Chicago guys feel the way we do about truly playing together when you tour together. Can you imagine the Chicago horn section on 'Roll With the Changes'? That would blow my mind! This tour promises to deliver some unique music from two bands who have made a ton of hit records, share that Midwest work ethic, and still refuse to sit back on their past accomplishments. We both keep raising the bar, challenging ourselves, and rocking hard. . . and the audience is the ultimate winner. We are psyched. . . I can't wait for this tour.”

REO's Kevin Cronin told us that despite some major successes since, the band will always be best remembered for their 1981 blockbuster, High Infidelity. Cronin explained that Hi Infidelity was just one of those key albums in rock that managed to seep into everyone's musical DNA at precisely the same time: "The record just got under people's skin; and I was saying that anyone who was in junior high through college in 1981, y'know, people couldn't help but have this record kind of drilled into 'em -- whether they (laughed) liked it or not. And so for us to kind of look back fondly and with humor and think back (to) what we were going through 30 years ago -- it doesn't seem like 30 years ago to me. That seems surreal because I remember it so vividly as though it were last week, or something.”
