Rod Stewart 'Rarities' collection features Elton, Who, & Hendrix covers

8/1/2013

Rod Stewart's early-'70s heyday will be featured on the September 3rd archival release, Rarities. The double disc, 24-track set, features alternate takes and BBC in-studio radio performances of classic cuts from what many consider his golden era, encompassing material from his first five albums -- The Rod Stewart Album (1969), Gasoline Alley (1970), Every Picture Tells A Story (1971), Never A Dull Moment (1972), and Smiler (1974).

Highlights on the set features such Rod classics as "Maggie May," "You Wear It Well," and "Seems Like A Long Time," along with his notable covers of the Who's "Pinball Wizard," Jimi Hendrix's "Angel," Cole Porter's "Every Time We Say Goodbye," Jerry Lee Lewis' "What Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made A Loser Out Of Me)," and Elton John's "Country Comfort" featuring the Faces, who back Rod on his live BBC tracks.

Although Rod Stewart maintained a separate solo career during his entire tenure with the Faces, he maintains that he was always 100 percent committed to the band until their split in 1975: "When I was with the Faces, I wanted to stay with the Faces. But I had a feeling that Mick (Jagger) wanted Woody in the (Rolling Stones). Although, he said face-to-face to me, he said, 'I'd never steal Ronnie (Wood) for the Stones,' I knew that not top be true, 'cause I think Ronnie was made to be a Rolling Stone. And maybe we'd taken the bad as far as we could and it was a wonderful five or six years of drunkenness and silliness."
