The Eagles have just announced the first 2014 dates of their ongoing 40th Anniversary tour. The band is set to open the newly revamped Forum in Los Angeles over three nights on January 15th, 17th, and 18th. The career spanning shows feature the first performances of original guitarist Bernie Leadon since his departure in 1975.
During Tuesday's (July 30th) press conference announcing the gigs, Eagles manager and music mogul Irving Azoff highlighted the connection between the band and the arena: "The Forum is an iconic Southern California landmark and with the vision of the Madison Square Garden Company is sure to become the world's quintessential music-focused venue. Since the 1970's, the Eagles have a long and rich history with the Forum. The building has played an important role in the growth and development of the band from their early Southern California roots to becoming a worldwide touring phenomenon. With its unsurpassed acoustics and warm intimate arena experience, it's always been the band's favorite building to perform in and we're anxiously looking forward to kicking off the next era of the Forum this January."
Pollstar reported that the Madison Square Garden Company, which acquired the legendary venue last year from the Faithful Central Bible Church, plans to invest $100 million into the Forum, along with its presenting partner, Chase.
According to the report, "Plans include installing state-of-the-art technology, completely modernizing the interior and creating a unique 'sky deck' that will serve the largest concerts, events and productions. Another new feature will be tinted glass separating the concession areas from the arena floor to ensure concert fans don't miss a single note of a performance."
2013 marks bassist Timothy B. Schmit's 35th anniversary of joining the Eagles after replacing co-founder Randy Meisner. Schmit, who had replaced Meisner once before in Poco, was no stranger to the Eagles, traveling in the same musical circles -- and had even recorded with Don Henley and Glenn Frey as far back as 1974: "Listen, they don't do anything lightly (laughs). I was definitely investigated. I was not close friends with them, but I knew those guys and I had done one song on a Linda Ronstadt album with Don (Henley) and Glenn (Frey), that was the closest we'd come to playing with each other on a record. I was playing bass, Glenn played acoustic, and Don played drums. It was on the Heart Like A Wheel album."
