Aerosmith will release its latest concert film, Rock For The Rising Sun, on July 23rd. The concert doc was filmed during the band's 2011 Japanese dates, which closely followed a massive earthquake, a monstrous tsunami, and the subsequent meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear plant. The film's director, Casey Patrick Tebo, was able to zero in on Aerosmith's now 35-year relationship with its fans in Japan and chronicled how the band -- who was advised not to play the dates -- helped their fans heal from the triple tragedy.
Tebo, who along with working with the band over the years, has also worked with Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Stevie Nicks, Lady Antebellum, the Avett Brothers, and many others. He explained that Steven Tyler and Joe Perry provided a safe creative ground for him to work in: "Steven and Joe once taught me a great lesson in life, it's called 'Dare to Suck' -- it means, if you don't have the balls to just go and do something then you'll never know what great thing you might have missed out on. This movie was my 'Dare to Suck' moment."
Tebo recalled showing the Tyler and Perry the footage he shot of the band and its fans after the Japan dates: "I captured all this stuff, and when I got home to the States, I was like, 'I know I can make something of this, I'm just going to start putting something together.' While Steven and Joe were in LA, making an album with (producer) Jack Douglas, I rented out a theater, and emailed Steven and Joe, saying, 'I need you guys to come to this theater. I've got to show you something.' I played them the whole movie, and when the movie was over, Joe stood up, walked over to me, hugged me, and was like, 'That was f***ing amazing, unbelievable.' And Steven was really emotional as well."
When we caught up with Joe Perry he told us that he's particularly excited to get the DVD out for the fans: "It's not just a performance video, it's a documentary about how the fans reacted to us comin' to Japan. And we're goin' back again in about a month, when the DVD's released and so; it's really a special, special, different DVD. It's not just a performance DVD, y'know?"
