Guitarist J.Y. Young, the sole remaining founding member of Styx still touring with the band, says that in many ways, the group still feels like their in their '20s, Young, who's now 62 and leads the band with guitarists Tommy Shaw, admits that the trial and the tribulations of traveling on tour are the times that the band feels their age. Styx is currently out on the road with fellow Midwesterners REO Speedwagon and Ted Nugent.
We asked Young if his time with Styx feels more like 400 years rather than the 40: "When I've had a 24-hour travel day, it does feel like 400 years, but then after I've played the 90-minutes or the one hundred and fifteen minutes we do, or whatever it is, it's sort of like it started yesterday. And it's as wonderful as it ever was. There's no sort of magic potion, like being onstage with this band and God bless and rest John Panozzo's soul, our original drummer who was just a monster behind the drums, but Todd Sucherman is like having a new engine under the hood of this race car and I like taking this thing out for a drive."
