ROGER DALTREY NOT INTERESTED IN RECORDING SOLO COVERS ALBUM

10/30/2009

Although Roger Daltrey has featured a handful of cover tunes in his recent solo shows, he's adamant that he doesn't want to record a solo covers album. Since kicking off his dates earlier this month, Daltrey has tackled such Johnny Cash standards as "Folsom Prison Blues," "I Walk The Line," and "I Got Stripes," along with Pearl Jam's "Better Man" -- which he performed with Eddie Vedder. At every stop on the tour, he's been wowing crowds with two tunes -- "Freedom Ride" and "Gimme A Stone" -- from the 1998 concept album Largo which is based around classical composer Antonin Dvorak's 9th Symphony.

Who fans were thrilled with his live version of Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run" which was featured on his 2005 compilation Moonlighting: The Anthology. We asked Daltrey, if seeing how successful the cover came off, whether he'd consider an entire album of songs written by "The Boss": "No, there's no point. There's no point. I mean you can't out-Springsteen Springsteen. Y'know, you can't make it better. I mean, I listened to the version of 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me' from The Lost Boys soundtrack. That, I'm happy with -- 'cause, sorry Elton, but that's a better version than yours (laughs). And I don't think that version will ever be beaten. It's something about that track that I got right on that song."

Roger Daltrey performs tonight (October 30th) at Nashville's legendary Ryman Auditorium.
