ELO's Jeff Lynne set for Hollywood Walk of Fame

6/26/2013

ELO's Jeff Lynne and Motown legends Holland-Dozier-Holland will be among the entertainers to receive a star on L.A.'s Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2014. Examiner.com reported that the Walk of Fame Selection Committee also announced that other honorees set to receive stars next year include Rick Springfield, Ray Parker Jr., Tupac Shakur, Sally Field, Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Lange, Kaley Cuoco of The Big Bang Theory fame, Deirdre Hall, Dabney Coleman, Tavis Smiley, producer/director Don Mischer, Claire Danes, and former Saturday Night Live star, the late Phil Hartman.

The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson first met Jeff Lynne 25 years ago while Wilson was recording his self-titled solo debut. He recalled the strange conditions while working with Lynne, telling us that during the sessions, the ELO leader never took off his trademark sunglasses: "Working with Jeff Lynne, boy, I never saw his eyes, 'cause he had these real dark, thick dark glasses on at night. We worked at night, y'know we wrote -- and I never ever once saw his eyes. I don't even know what his eyes look like. All I could see were these dark glasses, this cool face and dark glasses. I never got to see his eyes."

Although Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote for many Motown acts -- they were mainly responsible for most of the Supremes and Four Tops hits. Lamont Dozier says that the Tops' frontman, Levi Stubbs, had a vocal range and musical vocabulary that enabled him and brothers Eddie and Brian Holland to break boundaries that would've been unthinkable with a lesser singer: "Some of the 'Tops stuff, where it almost sounds operatic in some places, y'know? So we would mix that with gospel -- 'What if we take a gospel song, maybe a piece of Sam Cooke's old gospel days, or Aretha Franklin?' -- or that type of thing. Mix it with Mantovani (laughs) y'know what I mean. 'Cause that's where we were thinking the operatic types of things, y'know, (sings) 'Ohhhhh Bernadette.' Y'know, that stuff."
