Out today (November 13th) on DVD and Blu-ray disc is Paul McCartney's latest live concert collection -- Live Kisses. The set, which was recorded at L.A.'s legendary Capitol Studios on February 9th, features the former Beatle running through 13 tracks from his recent Top 10 hit standards collection, Kisses On The Bottom.
McCartney, who only sang and didn't play an instrument during the performance, was backed during the invite-only show by musical director Diana Krall on piano, bassist John Clayton, drummer Karriem Riggins, guitarists John Pizzarelli and Anthony Wilson, vibraphonist Mike Mainieri, and conductor Alan Broadbent. Also featured on the disc is Joe Walsh on guitar and McCartney's touring drummer Abe Laboriel Jr., who supplies occasional backing vocals.
McCartney recalled that family sing-alongs in the '40s and '50s mainly featured standards and that they went on to form the bedrock to his and John Lennon's early songs for the Beatles: "And I think when we came to write, me and John came to write -- he's the same, he didn't have the big sing-along thing, but some of his favorite songs were from that era. So I think we were like, basing what we were doing (on that era), but the structure's still there. So yeah, I remember these things and started the project with that in mind."
McCartney admits that not all of the songs on Kisses On The Bottom -- and now Live Kisses -- were childhood favorites of his: "I actually learned a few that I didn't know, that I fell in love with, because somebody just said, 'What about that one?' -- My new favorite song! And the other thing is, we did try and avoid the most popular ones but, if everyone's done it . . . so we tried to stay off-piste."
The tracklisting to Live Kisses is: "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter," "Home (When Shadows Fall)," "It's Only A Paper Moon," "The Glory Of Love," "More I Cannot Wish You," "We Three (My Echo, My Shadow And Me)," "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive," "My Valentine," "Always," "My Very Good Friend The Milkman," "Bye Bye Blackbird," "Get Yourself Another Fool," and "My One And Only Love."
The bonus features the video of McCartney's self-directed clip for "My Valentine" starring Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp -- along with five alternate versions and a "Making Of" video of the clip.
Also included is the "Kisses On The Bottom Album Interview" with McCartney and producer Tommy LiPuma interviewed by journalist Robert Hilburn.
