Thursday, 11/8 -- Hi. How are you, the listener, doing today?

JC is just not that into soccer. Then we imagined American football without being able to use one’s hands.

John thinks Missouri would be a good microcosm of the country: two big cities & many rural folk.

Genesis’ “Paperlate” (originally only available in the U.S. on Three Sides Live) came from a line in the 1973 Genesis song "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" ("Paper late, cried a voice in the crowd"), which Genesis rehearsed at a soundcheck, leading to the conception of the song. "Paperlate" is one of two Genesis songs that features the Earth, Wind & Fire horn section, the other being "No Reply At All", also from the Abacab sessions. “Paper Late” is what the evening newspaper sellers used to shout in London, which is why it was used in the original song anyway.

We three men were on “Station A” yesterday. (Laurie was spared having to spend all day here.) They have opened a museum and the three of us all worked on that station (some longer than others – some still). But it was the first time the three of us were on that station together – not that I contributed much to the conversation. And I had been drinking champagne without any of the promised food. See us from many years ago here. (registration required).

We had legendary writer & director John Sayles on the air with us this morning. He wrote or directed Passion Fish (1992), Eight Men Out (1988), The Brother from Another Planet (1984), Baby It's You (1983), The Howling (1981) and Return of the Secaucus 7 (1980) among others. U-Man had actually seen Eight Men Out and actually had a question!

His first writing project was Piranha (1978) and he received $10,000 (the Writer’s Guild of America minimum). He followed that up with Alligator (1980). Here is the trailer for Piranha.

John Sayles told us his take on the writers’ strike. It’s all about “new media.”

His new movie is Honeydripper, premiering at the Saint Louis Film Festival Thursday (tonight) at the Tivoli. For more information go to www.cinemastlouis.org.

We also had Elaine Viets on the air with us. She is recovering from a stroke she had in April. She had a four-day headache that she thought was a migraine. The doctors sent her home from the hospital and then two days later. Blam! She woke up to find out that her family was planning her funeral, but they were planning it wrong: no bagpipes!

She told us how she was unceremoniously dumped from our “local paper” after 27 years. Her friends still working at the paper are worried due to all the changes going on now.

She told aspiring writers to look up an Association of Artists' Representatives agent. Click here.

We talked about “Mythbusters” and her appearance on their pilot episode. She has another Helen Hawthorne book coming out in May. She has a book signing Saturday at the Barnes & Noble in Ladue. Come by and see her $34k haircut (thanks to her brain surgery). Her website is here.

Kroger stores are still open in Troy, Warrenton and Rolla, MO. The JoY was stand-up from Rita Rudner. The 3fA featured Neil Young. The Vault was “All Day Music” by War. Finally, the opposite of Morley Safer is Leslie Stahl.
