Monday, 10/22 -- Hi everybody! Thanks for joining us on the Showgram today.

One week from today we will have a new Mrs. Corcoran.

JC says that the new ramp from I–40 to I–170 will open today and promptly close in a week or two to be repainted.

John used to hunt and wore electric socks. I found them on “one of the Internets” for as little as $110. “The basic Thunderbolt electric sock kit contains a pair of heated, high-quality socks coupled to a state-of-the-art rechargeable battery pack. With a high-low power selection switch waist-mounted control box. The control box features a built-in LED which gives an indication of high or low heat settings and shows the state of charge of the battery. Also included is a 110 volt "smart" battery charger.”

The less expensive socks are as little as $30 and use a “D” battery.

We speculated that the Baseball Players Union one day may sue for having their players play in “less than optimal” (read: cold) conditions."

On November 23, 1990, Bo Diaz was killed when a satellite dish that he was adjusting on the roof of his home in Caracas, Venezuela fell on him. He was 37 years old. He played for these teams: Boston Red Sox (1977), Cleveland Indians (1978-1981), Philadelphia Phillies (1982-1985) and Cincinnati Reds (1985-1989).

Jay Leno is not in town. It was just a dream JC had.

Here’s JC’s list of his favorite 40 Rom-Coms: click here.

A doppelgänger is the ghostly double of a living person, a sinister form. "Doppelgänger" has come to refer (as in German) to any double or look-alike of a person — most commonly (as Laurie said) an “evil twin.”

Thirteen Days (2000) is a historical film directed by Roger Donaldson about the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, seen from a US perspective. It stars Bruce Greenwood as John F. Kennedy, Kevin Costner as Kenny O'Donnell, Dylan Baker as Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara and Steven Culp as Robert F. Kennedy.

We had a tape of Van Halen from last week. Since they aren’t coming here on Sunday maybe this will ease the pain … or not.

The worst job we can think of is “prison foreskin searcher.”

  3. Inadvertently sharing others’ e-mail addresses.
  4. Having a wimpy handshake.

Who’d We See?

JC: Friday – Started with a shot of cortisone in his back. Then he picked up the wedding rings and went to Bristol’s for dinner. He watched “Best of Chris Farley” with his daughters. Saturday – he visited Laurie at her remote. That evening he and his daughters watched Tootsie and ate Dewey’s pizza. Sunday – walked at Queeny Park. He went to brunch at First Watch and saw Mike & Claudia Bush. He ended the weekend with his daughter’s field hockey game.

Laurie: Friday – she got her car back from her accident, but now she hears a noise! So, it’s going back to the shop. Saturday – she had her remote at Viviano’s Festa Italiano where she saw Gail Barth, author of One of Our Wise Men is Missing. Sunday – a party for their assistant stage manager and another dog sighting. And all weekend she starred in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change as she has been doing for months, but it is closing in a few weeks, so if you, the listener, haven’t seen it yet, ya better!

John: Friday – soccer with his girls. Saturday – he played golf with the boss. The boss sang “Baby Fat” by Wet Willie. John also had more kids’ sports & a fall festival. Sunday – Soccer games and a wedding reception.

Me (Idiots can skip this part): Friday – My wife was outta town again for the weekend so I cleaned up my house and backyard to prepare for the arrival of our new washing machine. Saturday – I was at Scottrade Center all day beginning at 11am, and after the game, I hung out with Bernie Federko, Kelly Chase, Steve Lohr (the namesake of the beer distributor) and their families. Bob Plager told us a joke I can’t repeat here. Then since my wife was outta town, I headed to John’s Town Hall in the Dorchester on Skinker. Sunday – I went to an outdoor wedding reception in Lake Saint Louis – congratulations to Jim & Katie. It was very windy. Among the guests I saw: Mr.& Mrs. John Ulett and 2/3 of their daughters. Mrs. Ulett had her eyes fixed recently and now she has braces. I think she’s preparing to leave him.

We had Jennifer Stockburger from Consumer Reports talking about tires. She told us about the “penny test.”

Here's it is in three-steps:

    1. Take a penny and pinch Abe's body between your thumb and forefinger.
    2. Put Lincoln's head into one of the grooves on the tread. Select a point on your tire where tread appears the lowest.
    3. If any part of Abe Lincoln's head is obscured by the tread, you're driving with the legal and safe amount of tread. If you can see above his head, where it says "In God We Trust," take a hint: you're ready for a new tire.

Watch out for low inflation and see their recommendations for high performance tires in the November issue.

No matter how bad the Rams are, they aren’t as bad as the first two seasons the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had. In 1976-77, Tampa Bay started the first of two seasons winless with an overall 0-26 record before finally winning its first game in 1977 on the road against New Orleans. Saints head coach Hank Stram was fired after losing to the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay went out the next week and won their first home game over the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1977 season finale.

Captain Carl’s Buried Treasure was “I’m Not Here” because I wasn’t. I had recorded it the night before the Best of the Showgram.

The JoY was Steve Martin talking about “love.” The 3fA featured Grand Funk Railroad and tickets to the Last Comic Standing Live Tour. The Vault was “The Long & Winding Road” by Paul McCartney from the Abbey Road Sessions. Finally, Pat Harrington, Jr. played Dwayne F. Schneider for 10 seasons on CBS’s “One Day at a Time.”
